Sketch a Fish Exhibit – Qubein Children’s Museum

The Sketch a Fish interactive at the Nido & Mariana Qubein Children’s Museum in High Point, North Carolina offers children a seemingly magical combined real world / digital world experience.

Children start by coloring in drawing templates of sea creatures. Then the children place their drawings into a red-and-white box shaped like a buoy drum with a scanner. Software then transforms their art into animated characters that swim alongside other sea creatures in a virtual aquarium displayed on an LED video wall.

To help further the real world / digital effect, a red, L-shaped pipe connects the top of a buoy drum to the left side of the video wall shroud. In the digital aquarium, the red pipe continues as a drawing that empties the scanned sea creature traveling up the pipe from the drum and into the video wall scene.

The interactive covers the wall at the head of the Art Studio room, where it is a natural fit since this exhibit promotes the creation of new art by children visiting the museum. Around the LED screen, Holt designed and built a protective laminated structure that included the LED shroud, a base panel with shelving, the buoy drum, L-shaped pipe, and 3D title letters.

Following fabrication, Holt handled delivery and installation on site and completed the project by configuring the screens.
